The Incredible Tree Dahlia

Yesterday me and my work colleague discovered something incredible – the tree dahlia in the Fernery was flowering for the first time ever at Ashridge!! How exciting is that!

It’s rare to get them to flower at all in the UK and we have one flower with another bud getting ready to open. Seeing it for the first time was amazing, my highlight at Ashridge so far! I’ll post another photo when the second flower opens. πŸ™‚

    • It is!! Tree dahlias (Dahlia imperialis is the botanical name) come from the mountains of Mexico and Guatemala – they can reach up to 30 feet high! Apparently they are quite common in gardens in California, it’s the perfect climate for them there. πŸ™‚ x
